Background
Shortly after graduating with a degree in Law from Keio University in 1966, Yohji Yamamoto realized that a Law career was not for him. Alongside working at his mother’s sewing shop, he enrolled in the Bunka Fashion College, which boasts alumni such as Jun Takahashi, Junya Watanabe, and Tsumori Chisato. At 1977 Tokyo Fashion Week, he showed his first women’s ready-to-wear line called “Y’s,” and “Y’s For Men” followed shortly after. The clothes were predominantly day-to-day pieces, consisting of gloomy shades, superb fabrics, and bellowing cuts. These brilliant trousers feature a D-Ring belt which intertwines with bondage straps allowing for fit alteration. Other details include a set cuff, darting at the knees, and vintage cotton.
