Undercover’s Spring Summer 2003 “Scab” collection was a turning point in Jun Takahashi’s career, as it was the first time he showed at Paris Fashion Week. Previously a relatively unknown designer outside of Japan, Takahashi finally brought his unique perspective to the world’s stage. Scab combines DIY crust-punk aesthetics with ethnic fabrics and unexpected silhouettes. The collection garnered additional attention for its closing, which featured models wearing an array of colored burkas, a less than subtle reference to 9/11 and the charged political climate that followed. Renowned for Takahashi’s idiosyncratic design elements, Scab is often attributed as one of the greatest debut collections to ever debut at PFW to this day. These trousers feature a crust construction portraying a DIY aesthetic, with ethnic print extensions fused with the bottom hems. The fabric frays at the hem, an embodiment of SS03’s overall mystique. Additionally, the jeans have a silver zipper fly closure, signature “Scab” zipper detailing around the waist, and O ring belt loops at each side.
