Jean Paul Gaultier was no stranger to subversive and at times whacky design choices. It's these design quirks and his ability to poke fun at both the opulence of the fashion world and its portrayed elegance that made him so beloved. He did this by blending the supposed high culture of the euro-centric fashion world with mischievous punk energy. His use of tattoo tops and absurd Trompe-l'œil prints were an exploration of sexuality, wrapped in the garishness of flamboyant prints and fabrics. This knitwear piece from Autumn Winter 1991 is quintessential Gaultier. The play on heteronormative sexiness and the sleek cut of the garment is meant to simulate the anatomy of the ideal male figure.
