Details
Issey Miyake has been a pioneer of fashion, design and textile technology since the designer first established his studio in 1970. The Japanese designer studied graphic design in Tokyo at Tama Art University, after graduating he worked in Paris under the tutelage of Guy Laroche at Givenchy. After a few years in Paris and Manhattan, he returned to his native Japan and formed the now renowned Miyake Design Studio. Miyake was interested in sculpture and the human body, he would experiment with different fabrics and sewing techniques to showcase how body and fabric would uniquely conform to each other. In the ’80s and ’90s Miyake began experimenting with polyester pleats, his new line “Pleats Please” would offer garments that were comfortable, maneuverable and would transfigure to the wearer's body. Miyake's interests in futurism and technology shine through in his numerous diffusion lines, A-POC (A Piece of Cloth) was a briefly lived but innovative line that focused on creating garments using software and a single bolt of fabric. Miyake’s legacy is defined by technique and transformative design rather than just fashion and runway shows. These reversible pleated shorts are done in a cotton fabrication and feature an elastic waistband, and tie dye print throughout.
