Details
Known for his minimalist designs and penchant for deconstructed garments, Helmut Lang was one of fashion’s most renowned auteurs. Helmut set up his first made-to-measure fashion studio in his native Vienna in 1977 followed by a consequent boutique two years later at the age of 23. Helmut was one of the industry's few autodidacts, given he was not trained formally in tailoring or in fashion design. His first few catwalk shows in Paris during the 90’s set him apart from his contemporaries, right away his penchant for minimalism and sharp sartorial line work was present in his dresses and slim-cut suits. His sense of minimalism extended not only to his austere and sharp designs, but also to his marketing campaigns, his website featured sparse links and simple product shots. After several runway shows, an uber-successful jeans line, relocating to New York and fundamentally changing New York fashion week, Helmut left his label and the industry behind to pursue a career as an artist. This leather moto racing jacket exemplifies the best of Lang, sharp jagged lines give the garment a more severe look, and the laser-cut elbows juxtapose well with Lang’s stringent design. Tonal bondage straps accent the cuffs and back of the jacket.
