Raf Simons “Penelope Tree” Hoodie - SS03 “Consumed”

In one of the seminal Raf Simons’ collections Spring Summer 2003’s “Consumed” the designer pointed his barrel at materialism and our growing dependence on capitalist culture. Simons explored the relationship between capitalist iconographies like brand logos and symbols to their consumers. To achieve this, the designer turned to the work of collage artist Ashley Bickerton who was known for using brand logos as a critique of capitalism. This hoodie is done in a terry cotton fabrication and features a graphic of “Penelope Tree” from Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball. Tree serves as a representation for youth culture as a whole being co-opted by fashion elites and socialites.
